About The Lyrics

The Hindi lyrics of this song were obtained from the LyricsTranslate.com website [1]. The English translation of most of the song was taken from the English subtitles of the original movie. The final versions of the Hindi lyrics and English translation were put together by P. Mohan [2].

Fun Facts

The song is picturized on Sunil Dutt who plays the role of Gopinath who carries passengers on his boat across the Ganges river for a living, and on Nutan, who plays the role of Radha Devi who studies at the city college. Gopinath carries Radha Devi across the river each day and gives her a rose.

At the beginning of the song, Sunil Dutt gets annoyed with Nutan when she uses the word “Shor” (literally, noise, in the phrase “I hear the rustling (noise) of the wind”). He corrects her by saying the word is “Sor” not “Shor”. Afterwards, Nutan obediently uses the word “Sor” instead of “Shor”. However, the correct pronunciation is “Shor” (शोर). Just before the song starts, Sunil Dutt tells Nutan that he is an uneducated idiot who just rows boats. It is he who is not pronouncing the word correctly.

The song was nominated for three Filmfare Awards in 1968: Best Lyricist (Anand Bakshi), Best Male Playback Singer (Mukesh) and Best Female Playback Singer (Lata Mangeshkar). It did not win an award. However, the movie won three Filmfare Awards.
