Fun Facts

Mohammed Rafi sang the main vocals for Rishi Kapoor’s character, while Amit Kumar (son of Kishore Kumar) sang a single line for Amitabh Bachchan’s character. Interestingly, Amit Kumar was not officially credited for his contribution.

Laxmikant–Pyarelal, who composed the song, won the 1978 Filmfare Award for Best Music Director for their music in Amar Akbar Anthony. Amitabh Bachchan also won the Best Actor award for his role as Anthony.

The lyrics humorously comment on the tradition of women wearing veils and the allure hidden behind them.

The song is performed as a qawwali by Rishi Kapoor’s character, Akbar Illahabadi, in a public mehfil to woo Dr. Salma (Neetu Singh), while her father (Mukri) tries to keep her veiled.

The scene is rich in Bollywood masala, blending romance, comedy, and dramatic irony. As Akbar sings, Anthony (Amitabh Bachchan) and Bharati (Nirupa Roy) unknowingly watch their long-lost brother and son perform.
