Fun Facts

This song marked a major comeback for Kishore Kumar as a playback singer. It was one of the first big hits in his second innings and helped re-establish him as a top voice in Bollywood.

The song is picturized on Rajesh Khanna in an open jeep, serenading Sharmila Tagore, who is seated in a toy train on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway.

Due to scheduling conflicts, Rajesh Khanna’s scenes were shot in Darjeeling, while Sharmila Tagore’s scenes were filmed separately on a studio train set in Mumbai. The two were never actually together during the shoot, and the footage was cleverly edited to make it appear as if they were interacting.

In the song, Sharmila Tagore is seen reading “When Eight Bells Toll” by Alistair MacLean, a thriller novel published in 1966.

The song played a huge role in catapulting Rajesh Khanna to superstardom. His charm, combined with Kishore Kumar’s voice, created a magical screen presence.

Aradhana won the Best Film Award at the 17th Filmfare Awards in 1970. Sharmila Tagore won Best Actress for her role in the film. Kishore Kumar won Best Male Playback Singer for another song from the same film.
