About The Lyrics

The Hindi lyrics for this song were mostly obtained from the Lyrics Boutique website [1]. The English translation of the lyrics was obtained from the Mr. and Mrs. 55 – Classic Bollywood Revisited! website [2], from Nasir’s Eclectic Blog [3], and from the English subtitles of the movie. The final versions of the Hindi lyrics and English translation were put together by P. Mohan using Google Translate and assistance from Dr. Dinesh Pathak [4].

Fun Facts

The song is a turning point in the film, reflecting the emotional turmoil of Vijaykamal Singh (played by Sanjeev Kumar), a mentally unstable man who forms a fragile emotional bond with Chand (played by Mumtaz), a courtesan brought in to help him recover.

The lyrics metaphorically express how the protagonist feels used and discarded, like a toy: “Khilona jaan kar tum toh mera dil tod jaate ho” (You consider me a toy and keep on breaking my heart).

Sanjeev Kumar was reportedly present during the recording of the song. He was so moved by Mohammed Rafi’s performance that it helped him internalize the character’s pain more deeply for his on-screen portrayal.

Mumtaz won the 1971 Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her role in the movie. Khilona won the 1971 Filmfare Award for Best Movie. It was the 6th top-grossing film at the Indian Box Office in 1970.

The song was nominated for the 1971 Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer (Mohammed Rafi) but did not get win the award.
