| saat samundar paar se gudiyo ke bazaar se saat samundar paar se gudiyo ke bazaar se achhi si gudiya laana gudiya chaahe na lana pappa jaldi aa jana pappa jaldi aa jana | From a doll store across the seven seas, From a doll store across the seven seas, Please bring us back a doll. Whether you bring a doll or not, Please come home soon, Papa! Please come home soon, Papa! |
| saat samundar paar se gudiyo ke bazaar se achhi si gudiya laana gudiya chaahe na lana pappa jaldi aa jana pappa jaldi aa jana | From a doll store across the seven seas, Please bring us back a doll. Whether you bring a doll or not, Please come home soon, Papa! Please come home soon, Papa! |
| La la la La la la la la la | La la la La la la la la la |
| tum pardes gaye jab se bas ye haal huwa tab se dil divana lagata hai ghar virana lagata hai jhilmil chand sitaaro ne darwajo divaro ne sabne puchha hai ham se kab jee chhutega gam se kab jee chhutega gam se kab hoga unka aana pappa jaldi aa jana pappa jaldi aa jana | Ever since you went abroad, our lives have not been the same. My heart has gone mad, as this house feels desolate without you. The shining moon and stars, these doors and walls, They have all asked me, “When will your heart be liberated from sorrow? When will your heart be liberated from sorrow? When is the date of his return?” Please come home soon, Papa! Please come home soon, Papa! |
| ma bhi lori nahi gaati hamko nind nahi aati khel khilaune tut gaye sangi saathi chhut gaye jeb hamaari khaali hai aur aati diwali hai ham sabko na tadpaao apne ghar wapas aao apne ghar wapas aao aur kabhee phir na jaana pappa jaldi aa jana pappa jaldi aa jana | Since Mom does not sing lullabies anymore, we have trouble falling asleep. Our toys are broken, and our companions have left us Our pockets are empty, and Diwali is coming Please do not torment us any longer. Once you return home, Once you return home, Never leave us again. Please come home soon, Papa! Please come home soon, Papa! |
| khat na samjho taar hai ye kagaj nahee hai pyar hai ye duri aur itni duri aisi bhi kya majburi tum koi nadan nahi tum isse anjan nahi is jivan ke sapne ho ek tumhee to apne ho ek tumhee to apne ho sara jag hai begana pappa jaldi aa jana pappa jaldi aa jana | Consider this a telegram, not a letter. It is made of love, not paper. There is so much distance between us. Why do you have to be so far? You are not naive, nor are you unaware that You are my dream in this life. I consider only you to be mine. I consider only you to be mine. I am estranged from the rest of the world. Please come home soon, Papa! Please come home soon, Papa! |

About The Lyrics
The Hindi lyrics for this song were obtained from the Hindi Geetmala website [1]. The English translation of the song was obtained from the Mr. and Mrs. 55 – Classic Bollywood Revisited website [2]. The final version of the translation was put together by P. Mohan [3].
Fun Facts
Gopal (Bharat Bhushan) and Sharda (Shalini) are a loving couple with two daughters, Mala and Geeta, and a son, Sushil. They are not very well off and this prompts Gopal to seek employment overseas. Sharda and the three children sing this song as they anxiously await Gopal’s return. Naturally, they are excited about the toys and gifts he will bring to them from abroad. However, the song shows that the children dearly miss the love and support of their father regardless of the gifts that he will bring.
