Fun Facts

The video features Nawab Banoo who made her first appearance on the silver screen in Barsaat at age 16. She was given the name Nimmi by Raj Kapoor.

Lyricist Shailendra initially declined Raj Kapoor’s offer to write for Aag (1948), not wanting to commercialize his poetry. Later, when he needed financial help, Kapoor gave him money. When Shailendra returned to repay it, Kapoor refused and asked for two songs instead, one of which was this song. Thus began Shailendra’s legendary career in Bollywood.

This song was part of the debut soundtrack of Shankar–Jaikishan, who went on to become one of the most iconic music director duos in Indian cinema. Their fresh orchestration and emotional melodies revolutionized Bollywood music.

The song transitions from a joyful romantic tone to a melancholic mood, reflecting the emotional journey of the characters. This shift is masterfully handled by both the music and the vocals by Lata Mangeshkar.
