Fun Facts

The Ganges River (Ganga in Hindi) is a sacred body of water to Hindus that begins high in the Himalaya Mountains and empties out into the Bay of Bengal. The Yamuna River is the second-largest tributary of the Ganges River. Triveni Sangam in southern Uttar Pradesh is one of the holiest places; it is the point where the Ganges River and the Yamuna River meet. “Sangam” means “confluence”.

The song is picturized on Sundar (Raj Kapoor) and Radha (Vyjayanthimala). Sundar likens the meeting and merging of the Ganga and Jamuna rivers to the uniting and merging of his heart with Radha’s. This is why he sings, “If the union of two rivers is called to be so holy, why not where two hearts meet?

The Rigveda refers to the auspiciousness of the confluence of the Ganga and Jamuna rivers by saying, “Those who bathe at the place where the two rivers, white and dark, flow together, rise up to heaven.” This is probably why Sundar sings, “Heaven settles right there”.
